Things NOT to say to a heart warrior

Sometimes, I know it can be difficult to know what to say when a family is expecting a medical intervention, but please try to not say these things — especially #2!!

  1. Oh, you had surgery, you're fixed now? -- Unfortunately, no. CHD is a disease, that is not curable and requires palliative care for the remainder of our lives

  2. Will you make it through? -- This one gets me. While every procedure I have comes with a SIGNIFICANT risk, having others ask if I'll make it through is an unnecessary stress and conversation that needs to be had.

  3. You'll never be able to do that. -- While individuals who have CHD live with limitations, those limitations are NOT stopping points. Many things we do, we simply do differently.

INSTEAD: Remain positive. One thing that’s helpful is TRULY just checking in, asking how someone is doing, and offering if there is anything that you can do to help. (Meals are ALWAYS helpful).
